Black Panther’s Circle of Hype

Fortunately your opinion is of less merit than mine.

Ah, some smug condescension.

Star Wars was simply that, an action adventure film. It wasn't intended to be a tent pole for two or three generations of movie goers. And Jaws was, theoretically, a classic tale of man vs nature.

You miss my point. Jaws, and to a lesser extent Star Wars, are the first real movie blockbusters. After their release, critics balked at the film's legacy: "[Jaws] recalibrated the profit potential of the Hollywood hit and redefined its status as a marketable commodity and cultural phenomenon as well.” The idea of a movie as a "marketable commodity" is the earliest example of the modern trend you abhor so much. People worried what Jaws' influence much like they worry about Marvel now.

So it is likely that in the coming years you will be encouraged to go to four to six films a year that are based, in some way, on comic books.

So what? In 2017, there were also good-to-great thrillers, comedies, dramas, documentaries, science fiction films, historical epics, horror films, etc. The vast majority of them were original ideas, and many of them made money.

Yet you will lap [Black Panter] up like manna from heaven because "its a black super hero" and this will assuage white guilt, black powerlessness, or any other social ill you may have.

Nice straw man, buddy. Go fuck yourself.

Pay your $10 penance and be absolved at the Marvel Church Of Super Hero Worship.

I saw Black Panther for free. Maybe I'll see I, Tonya this weekend instead. You know, because movies nowadays are doing just fine.
