Black people of Reddit, what is the most overt (or offensive) example of racism you have experienced, and where were you when it happened? [Serious]

I'm going to play devils advocate here for a moment regarding the first type of racism you've mentioned. I have made one of these comments myself, and well it might not have been a very polite thing to say in hindsight, it was a very honest and personal moment because my perception was being changed.

I vividly remember an old Russian lady lived in a small house along the path I took home from school when I was a kid. She was often outside working in her yard at the same time I was going home. I was taught to smile, say "Hello," and be friendly to people, so I would always smile and wave at the old woman as I was walking past her house.

She never smiled back or waved, not once. I never understood the reason, but I figured she must just be a mean old lady. There were probably other Russians around, but she was the only Russian I identified (she looked like this), and I grew up believing that Russians were probably just mean people.

Later on, when I was 18, I did a month of work for the Northwest Youth Core. I was a couch potato in pretty bad shape, but $1000 was too good to pass up. One of the 8 other kids on my squad was a Russian named Victor. He was super nice, friendly, and he worked harder than anybody else by a wide margin.

Since we worked side by side 8 hours a day for a month, we spent a lot of time together and I really enjoyed his company. I believe it was sometime during the third week that I said to him "Victor, I like you. You're not like the other Russians I've met." He asked me what I mean, and I told him the story of the old lady, and I'll never forget his response. He said "Yeah, yeah... I hate those Russians too!"

Anyway, Victor was a total badass and an awesome guy. I couldn't make one of the hikes, and he switched gear with me, so that I could use his personal hicking backpack, which was a lot more comfortable to wear (the one I given was tearing up my shoulders).

I probably offended him a little bit with that comment, but I think he recognized that I was in the process of realizing that Russians are actually pretty cool people. I just met a mean old lady, who happened to be Russian.

I didn't mean to make a racist comment, I was just being honest about an observation that I had made. It's been over ten years, and I'm grateful I met Victor, and that he was really cool about my bias.
