We blow our political problems way out of proportion here in the US.

We don’t live under a dictatorship, but we’re at risk of becoming one, and a disturbing number of people on the right would be down for that. We aren’t Nazi Germany, we’re the Weimar Republic, a heavily divided nation facing major economic problem (though not hyperinflation) where a fascist movement is being legitimized by the established conservative movement. We’re on the edge, and there is a fair chance of going over it in the future. Honestly this perspective tends to come from privilege (Happens to everyone, myself included), those who are fortunate enough to be isolated from many of our worse problems, don’t notice them the same way. For example, I’m white and am likely to never experience significant issues with police, let alone police brutality, and if we had someone even further to the right than Trump come to power, and start actually achieving the racial goals of his base, actually moving towards building camps and creating the Christian / White ethnostate that that a disturbing number of republican politicians and their funding sources dream of, I could get by. I could pretend to agree, I could fake being religious and be fine. If I weren’t white, if I couldn’t pass as being in the in-group by just keeping my beliefs to myself it would be impossible for me to be totally unaware of these things in the same way.
