It blows my mind that people in the US can't or won't visit a doctor either because they can't afford it or fear the bill they're going to get.

The crazy part is it's not even like this is limited to the poor (not that it should be), but I have "great" healthcare through my company compared to most in the US and I'm financially pretty secure and I still avoid medical care when possible. I know tons of people much better off than me who do the same!

The costs can just build up so fast that if it isn't something obviously life threatening or routine that's strictly covered by your policy you feel like you're getting ripped off no matter what. I messed up the bottom of my feet once playing pool basketball and went to be sure it wasn't going to be a serious healing issue, ended up costing me $450 to basically get neosporin, ace bandages, and some crutches.
