[Bonsai Beginner’s weekly thread –2020 week 43]

I have been researching around the internet but just found this sub! I am going to pick up a few young started Japanese maples later today that had sprouted from a dwarf tree in a relative's yard. I was hoping to attempt the process with one or two of these, as I should have quite some time to continue my learning before it is time for much serious work. I am in USDA zone 8B (near Portland, OR), and trying to figure out what would help my young plants survive the winter. Should I bring them inside, or keep them outside? At their small size, is a growbox beneficial? Would they benefit from being planted in the ground for this winter? I realize this may not be an ideal plant to start, but hey, free plants and a fun challenge. I have much more reading to do, I am so sorry if these questions are redundant.
