Book banning or protecting children? LGBTQ books at West Michigan library draw differing views

Respectfully, this is my township. I’ve spoken to hundred of my neighbors about this. I’ve not encountered 5 people who legitimately want the books gone and the library closed. OI is shady as hell, but this was a grassroots effort independent from OI. The 4 people running for the board are all running on creating a policy for controversial and sensitive materials which requires either parental permission/ approval or that moves all such materials to the adult section. The library has not been public about the changes they’ve made and the action they’ve taken which has led conservatives to speculate and create conspiracies which is making everything worse.

The library should have done two separate millage proposals. That would have solved half of the issues. The library hasn’t even done a pride display since last year and has removed books but is not commenting on why. The concerned parents are getting annoyed because they’re not hearing anything from the library when in reality all of their issues have already been resolved.

This is a complicated issue that is not as black and white as hatred toward lgbtq folk. There needs to be an open line of communication and compromise on BOTH sides. Reaching across the aisle doesn’t happen anymore though.
