Books that take magic "seriously"

"In a way, it is ideal to grow up in a harsh or strict or conservative setting when you want the exact opposite. It makes that breakaway, that final leap into totally f***edness, that much more of an exhilaration. Like that one kid in high school who rigidly follows all the rules and restrains their every primal urge, but upon tasting their first shot of cinnamon whiskey, becomes a raging alcoholic and drug enthusiast almost instantly. It just feels too good not to go all out, all at once. You see this kind of thing often in our cute and painstakingly rehearsed societies, repressed people break and become the most wild and ape-like of us all. There is no pacing, just the Great Binge, the gluttonous feeding of existential angst."
