Boris Johnson is delaying the inevitable again – and watching as Covid-19 surges

It’s because the people getting it tend to be younger now right? Which surely is a good thing while we still don’t have a vaccine?

I don’t get why they don’t just tell the old and vulnerable to shield again tbh. I know he said at the press conference that the best way of keeping them safe is stopping the spread entirely, but that seems impossible while things are still open (which they should be, economy has suffered enough).

And I can’t help thinking of my grandparents. They’re doing whatever they like, despite the rise in cases, because we’re “not in lockdown”. If they’d been told to stay in, they’d let me do their shopping for them again and would see literally noone. Instead they’re still going about their lives and mixing with people. How is the current strategy of us all being “in it together” safer than shielding them?

I’m not saying don’t still keep masks and social distancing enforced to manage the spread, but surely if all the risk of deaths of this second wave comes from vulnerable people (most of whom are retired and fairly economically inactive), we should just tell them to shield while the rest of us (cautiously) carry on?
