Is boycotting an event because the host country has human rights violations helpful? Why or why not?

Definitely an example, but I’ve also noticed it being used on more than just that event. While not wrong on pointing out the violations, I just don’t understand why people pick and choose when to bring up them up. The us is hosting the 2026 World Cup and many other previous events, and I didn’t notice anyone bitching. The inconsistency is my issue, seems disingenuous. If these human rights violations are related to the event, then yes of course it’s relevant to bring them up. But to be overly broad and complain about Qatar being a “fascist” country for example and they don’t deserve to have events like these, I don’t think that’s fair unless you consistently bring up the cons of the US and Europe when they host an event of the same caliber.
