The value of the virtue signal is felt though acts of moral high grounding. It yields public validation and status in the eyes of one's peers by having climbed to such heights, and personal validation as they reached the summit in the face of moral opposition. With this they have successfully improvised a moral exception for themselves to indulge in as well as those they decide to extend this exception to through association. With enough public recognition, they serve as virtue signal conduits for those socially beneath them, serving as a band wagon. We know this conduit today as the Democratic party and the band wagon as social justice warriors.

It's an act of compensating for one's own moral short comings via moral improv in the wake of one's own moral bankruptcy.
