[Breed]

I think my post might have gotten messed up. Let me try again in the comments:

Introduction

1) Will this be your first dog? If not, what experience do you have owning/training dogs?

  • This would be my fourth. I have had a mutt, a medium poodle and a rhodesian ridgeback. I have trained all of them myself in basic obedience, some advanced obedience and some tricks.

2) Do you have a preference for rescuing a dog vs. going through a reputable breeder?

  • I want a purebred dog with a pedigree from a reputable breeder.

3) Describe your ideal dog.

  • My ideal dog is of a large, healthy, little to non-shedding breed. The dog should be able to watch/guard/protect, medium energy/adaptable, eager to please, enthusiastic, playful and affectionate (with family). That being said, I do not expect a perfect match for my 'ideal' and am perfectly willing to compromise, and take into considerations individual differences.

4) What breeds or types of dogs are you interested in and why?

  • The breeds I am especially interested are: standard poodle, doberman pinscher, estrela mountain dog, cane corso, boxer and cao fila de sao miguel.

5) What sorts of things would you like to train your dog to do?

  • The dog would primarily be a companion and watch/guard dog.

6) Do you want to compete with your dog in a sport (e.g. agility, obedience, rally) or use your dog for a form of work (e.g. hunting, herding, livestock guarding)? If so, how much experience do you have with this work/sport?

  • I am interested in obedience, bitework, nosework, dogtrekking, agility, dog-dancing, trick-dogging, but only recreationally.

Care Commitments

7) How long do you want to devote to training, playing with, or otherwise interacting with your dog each day?

  • I would love to have a dog who eager to work, and does not get bored. I am willing to spend about 1-1.5 h in total training and playing with the dog.

8) How long can you exercise your dog each day, on average? What sorts of exercise are you planning to give your dog regularly and does that include using a dog park?

  • I need a dog that can keep up with me on an 1-1.5 h long, fast walk per day (this excludes at least 2x15-30 min pee breaks). There is no dog park in my town, but walking dogs together can be arranged.

9) How much regular brushing are you willing to do? Are you open to trimming hair, cleaning ears, or doing other grooming at home? If not, would you be willing to pay a professional to do it regularly?

  • I am willing to groom the dog daily and prefer doing so myself.

Personal Preferences

10) What size dog are you looking for?

  • Large; about 30 kg, +/- 5 kg (55-66 lbs). I prefer a taller and leaner dog to shorter and heavier dog.

11) How much shedding, barking, and slobber can you handle?

  • I would strongly prefer as little shedding as possible, and have a slight preference for as little slobber/barking without a reason as possible.

12) How important is being able to let your dog off-leash in an unfenced area?

  • It is somewhat important, but I can deal with other alternatives.

Dog Personality and Behavior

13) Do you want a snuggly dog or one that prefers some personal space?

  • I'd love a dog that is snuggly and enjoys physical affection/contact with their family.

14) Would you prefer a dog that wants to do its own thing or one that’s more eager-to-please?

  • I'd love a dog that is eager to please.

15) How would you prefer your dog to respond to someone knocking on the door or entering your yard? How would you prefer your dog to greet strangers or visitors?

  • I'd want the dog to be alerted and to investigate if someone rings the bell. The dog should not allow strangers entry without our presence and intervene if they do. With owners present, the dog should be calm.

16) Are you willing to manage a dog that is aggressive to other dogs?

  • Yes, although I'd slightly prefer a dog that is either friendly or aloof with other dogs.

17) Are there any other behaviors you can’t deal with or want to avoid?

  • I'd prefer a dog that does not have a high prey drive regarding game/can be taught to ignore wildlife.

Lifestyle

18) How often and how long will the dog be left alone?

  • Never or almost never. Almost always, there should be someone at home.

19) What are the dog-related preferences of other people in the house and what will be their involvement in caring for the dog?

  • Little to no shedding/slobber (mother), a dog that can go on a jog (father). My father might take the dog on morning/evening pee break walks or jogs.

20) Do you have other pets or are you planning on having other pets? What breed or type of animal are they?

  • I do not currently have any other pets, but might potentially keep chickens or quails in the future.

21) Will the dog be interacting with children regularly?

  • The dog might be interacting with children regularly. The children are used to being around a dog and leave him alone for the most part.

22) Do you rent or plan to rent in the future? If applicable, what breed or weight restrictions are on your current lease?

  • I do not rent or plan to.

23) What city or country do you live in and are you aware of any laws banning certain breeds?

  • I live in Slovakia, and am unaware of any breed restrictions in effect.

24) What is the average temperature of a typical summer and winter day where you live?

  • The average temperature in summer is 26 C (79 F), in winter -3 C (19 F). The dog must be able to tolerate extreme heat in heat waves.

Additional Information and Questions

25) Please provide any additional information you feel may be relevant.

  • The breed should be recognized by FCI or available in central Europe.

26) Feel free to ask any questions below. If you have personal experience with any of the breeds I am interested in, please, let me know what it is in the comments, or send me a message/chat message. Thank you kindly!
