Yep that sounds like student politics. Most student unions are dominated by cynical bloodsuckers whose sole purpose seems to be PR even to the detriment of the societies, sports clubs and student population they are supposed to represent. The following are first hand and second hand anecdotes from multiple universities.
A few friends of mine tried to set up an objectivist society. This attempt was blocked because (AND I SHIT YOU NOT HERE) ‘Objectivist sounds like a fascist word’.
Motion by a socialist soc to dismiss a member for using the term ‘boybands’.
Mandatory order from above to force members of a debate society to not speak their own opinion but instead be handed cards ‘for’ and ‘against’ to allow for numerical balance in all debates.
Large conference on the use of contextual offers (university offers with lower requirements for certain people). Trans, gender, race, sexual orientation, religion were all discussed. Income wasn’t.
Huge ban wave on certain topics from a student comedy night. Every week the exact same 2 guys do the comedy night with almost the exact same material.
Issues with the creation of a student building on the grounds that it ‘looked too phallic and masculine. A lower building with rounded edges, curves and certain changes was chosen instead.
Ban on divisive topics being discussed at a debate society (this one is almost universal now). All topics to be checked in with the student union first
Ban (or university supervisors who go round checking white t shirt events at another uni) on writing on white t shirts for society nights. This was following a national news story about students wearing white t shirts with writing making light of casual sex and abducted children.
Naturally for the most part life goes on as normal. The PCness is restricted to the very top of the student union and much like shit rolls downward.
