I broke my brain analysing Bruce McAvaney's rhetorical questions in yesterday's Blues v Pies commentary

Quality write-up. Amazing to see actual statistics to back up things I have been long saying about Bruce.

I'm surprised he's still going. Dennis Commeti seemingly went out while still going strong and with a passion for the game. Bruce's predominant passion has long been the horse racing. Combined with his leukaemia, he should probably just wrap things up and enjoy retirement.

The issue for Bruce right now is a constant need to fill space

I would argue that this has been an issue for AFL coverage all 2020. Why? Because of nobody in the fucking crowd - or scattered, restricted amounts. It was awful to watch the earlier games in particular. It felt awkward. A large amount of my friends and family weren't even watching. The TV commentators were forced to try commentate like radio commentators in order to fill in the empty space.

It's clear Bruce is well past it, but at the same time, he's been trying to adapt to commentating when not in the same commentary box as fellow commentators, with AFL games featuring mostly empty stands, all while having leukaemia.
