[Bruce Garrioch on Twitter] Bobby Ryan has been named the Ottawa Senators' nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy in voting done by the local chapter of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association

If he was still actively posting on Twitter and whatnot I'd agree with you, but his Twitter has been gone for 3 years now. I don't know if it's really doing much good to hold someone's Twitter likes over their heads 3 years after they completely stepped off the platform and say "we shouldnt celebrate his recovery by giving him a trophy when 3 years ago he liked some really bad tweets".

The Masterson is about overcoming adversity and yes, being a role model plays a big part. If you ask me, Ryan showing that alcoholism can be overcome even on the world's biggest stage is worthy of that honour considering he no longer actively promotes his personal beliefs. Hell, we don't know that he hasn't changed his views on things given the events of the last 3 years, so I really don't think it's fair to say it's irresponsible to give him an award like this.

If we say Ryan can't have this award for overcoming alcoholism because he liked something shitty on Twitter 3 years ago and then deleted everything, I don't really think that's sending a great message on it's own. People are capable of change, as he showed when he decided to do something about being an alcoholic. The world can look a lot different when it's not being seen through the sheen of a bottle so I'm not ready to crucify the guy for something 3 years in the past.
