Brutal conditions in provincial jails.

In my work I deal with "these people" a lot. I hear things like:

"Do you know what they did to my son? That should be illegal. We are going to sue?"

"My father doesn't belong in a jail he is sick and needs mental health treatment."

"My daughter needs help with her substance abuse, not a jail cell."

"They strip searched me and then put me in this cell with this crazy guy who kept yelling."

"They locked my husband down for 10 days when he arrived because of covid. He couldn't shower and couldn't use the phone or get any yard time."

"But I need my license to work, would the rather see me go on welfare?" (not custody related)

My response is always been to the effect of this is how the system has always worked. These are conditions that society, including you up until it happened to you considered acceptable or ignored. Why do you think that you would be any different? Why do you think your family would be any different.

I understand the tone is harsh. It is absolutely meant to be.
