Budget sharpening stones for beginners

I am not a fan of the inexpensive stones on Amazon mostly made in China, I'm also not a huge fan of combo stones for a few reasons, realistically it's not a huge money saver It will also allow you to give yourself more options going forward picking what you want to use.

One of my favorite stones to use is my Naniwa Chosera 400 , I purchased the Chosera 800 for a family member because I liked it so much, I have other students and I like them quite a lot however I do find I reach for my 400 quite often. One of the things I like to do is only use the Chosera 400 , for my entire sharpening process until that knife has a nice toothy edge that will cut clean through paper. It's all about consistency controlling my angle. I think it's good practice for people.

The Chosera stones are expensive but for good reason they offer quite a few benefits and Good reasons they are always on topl lists of sharpening reviews videos.

Suehiro Cerax 1000 is a great stone and it only costs about $40. I own the Suehiro Rika 5000 and that's a wonderful stone to use very creamy great feedback. There's two stones would be a pretty nice setup and would be quite a lot less than a lot of things. I factored in the many years that I would be using my stones and accessories. It's something that I know I did a great deal of research and thought before buying.

The king KW 65 I actually had that stone It was my first stone, there's anything wrong with it It's a good Japanese brand. I think the King Deluxe 800, or 1000 at about $30 on Amazon is a better stone and a better deal (large stones)

If you need a reasonably fast cutting stone dropping down to a 200 , 220 for repairing chips or damaged knives might be something to look at. I have the Chosera 400 for sorting out minor nicks and very dull knives. I tried the Cerax 320 and the performance was good I just didn't "like" it. A fairly soft stone. which is something you can expect in course grit models.
