Building House vs Apartment vs Rented House

I like your post. Many reasons but major one because this is more useful to lot of 30-35 years old about to make the biggest mistake of their lives. First things first, how long have you been staying in Bengaluru? (yes, it’s Bengaluru not Bangalore anymore!) Almost certainly you are out of state resident, aren’t ya? If you have stayed here for a while now then you would definitely know a few things out of the bat. Like some poster replied, water is getting depleted alarmingly fast. I thought chennai was fucked but looks like Bengaluru will hit dust sooner than chennai.

You will get lot of replies here saying buy apartment, buy land, invest in stocks, stay in rent etc. They are all right by their own weight just like there are many ways to cook food. My question is where do you see yourself in next 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 years. Is it Bengaluru or out of state or out of India or maybe at your parents place? Think about it for an hour and visualize yourself after all these years. Is your current job stable or do you think future is very much uncertain to keep you rooted in bengaluru? If yes, then go for an apartment if that fits well within your budget. If no, then go for renting. No brainer there. Are you working remote now and will your firm support remote work in future? If yes, then search a good place with lot of trees and parks. If no, then stay near office which is what I did.

My personal opinion is to build my own house or renovate my existing ancestral place. This way I can take care of my parents when they are no longer mobile. This gives me freedom to hire an architect and build a modular house at much less price with DIY tools. I stay away from land and apartments because the way they are currently valued are right out of their owners ass. Pardon my French, but this is true. Needless to say, I rent my house now. Current state of affairs are such that I would shy away from any debt. World economy is wobbly and last thing you want is debt and erosion of savings. Good luck and do let us know how it fares. I used to stay in Mahadevapura and commute to ITPL daily. Currently staying in coastal Karnataka at my parents place. Miss the Bengaluru weather but not the traffic and pollution. Also, bye bye rents and slummy landlords.
