Is Bunsen Labs the main successor?

It is obvious that Crunchbang++ came from Crunchbang...

Except, you're completely wrong on this point.

Neither Crunchbang++ nor Bunsen, strictly speaking, has any special (technical) claim to having "came from Crunchbang" over the other project. Both distros are really nothing more at this point than users forking/porting Corenominal's software over to Jessie. At this time there is relatively no difference between using either distro, or simply upgrading #!11 to Debian Jessie yourself.

Without the history it's very easy to confuse the issue, but you cannot assume the name means things in the current context. Assuming the name gives credability confuses the situation.

When corenominal announced #! was shutting down there was an attempt to continue the project as a community driven distro, starting from day one over on the #! user forum. This faction ultimately became what we now know as Bunsen Labs. During that time a number of ideas were thrown about by a number of #! users that included possible changes to the traditional #! model. Because of this a single developer, /r/computermouth ( Ben Young ), got concerned and decided to launch his own distro he named Crunchbang++. A version that just plain ported the software from Debian Wheezy to Jessie. Shortly after that the existing #! community officially completely their plans and announced Bunsen, ending up at about the same plan. [

So, while CB++ launched first, it wasn't necessarily in planning before Bunsen nor was it developed by someone with any special status on the original #! project. Like Bunsen, CB++ is a just a new player starting over with the old distro as a model and base. Ultimately neither computermouth and the Bunsen Labs people get technical claim to being special, as a continuation of #!.

Now, if you want to take politics, Bunsen Labs could be considered a proper community continuation of #! over CB++, because it's made up of a number of active users from the official #! forums. Additionally Bunsen is currently highlighted on the #! website. Though I've been told that doesn't amount to an official endorsement of the project by corenominal.

For reference, here's a previous post I made on the matter. Compete with reply from computermouth. Who, to his credit, is very clear on these discussions about the situation.

Bunsen Labs has to be one of the worst distro names.

While this is a matter of personal taste, it's actually very logical for users who understand Crunchbang's history. Bunsen is the lab assistant to Dr Beaker Honeydew, a Muppet. Past releases for #! used Muppet characters for their code names ( #!11 was Waldorf and #!10 was Statler ).

Additionally the Bunsen name came about in an attempt to respect corenominal's wishes. Which computermouth pointed out at one point.
