Buying an amp for my Beyerdynamic dt880's that I can hook up with my Scarlett 2i4

What do you mean by "...it doesn't do them justice..."? I'm afraid that is simply how 880s sound :-p

Your Scarlett 2i4 interface should actually be a pretty good match for the DT880s.

  • A 10 ohm output impedance is pretty common for studio gear
  • For a good "damping factor" you want at least 8 times higher headphone input impedance
  • The 250 ohm 880 is a good match for the 10 ohm Scarlett 2i4

I'd be surprised if you don't get enough volume out of this setup. None of the DT series headphones are particularly hard to drive despite their reputation (i.e. 600 ohm). So I would simply start by downloading the Scarlett's manual from the official site and getting the interface set up correctly.

The manual should also explain how to connect an external amp:

  • Connect RCA cable to 2i4's LINE OUTPUTS 1 and 2.
  • Connect other end of the cable to the matching plugs on the amp
  • Plug headphone into amp and you're done.
