I know with women it's a huge surprise.
Not for me, it wasn't. There wasn't any way on G-d's green earth that I would let anybody but me pick the rings I was supposed to be wearing for the rest of my life.

Haha, love this. I sent my husband an email with ideas of ring styles and stones I liked way before we got engaged. No shame in the game. (To be fair, we had discussed marriage very early in our relationship, before I sent the email. I think he was the first to mention it, not that that should matter). He knows I'm particular, and it worked out great because he ended up completely surprising me with the proposal, as well as the actual ring, which I loved so much I didn't want to take it off! I very reluctantly did when I needed to get it resized. But yeah. High five for being picky and knowing what we want :)
