California becomes first state to offer free school breakfast and lunch to all students

I had free lunch growing up as a kid. Due to my last name though, I was always last in line whenever we lined up for school lunch. Now, I don't know if this is the same for all schools, but the older kids ate lunch last. For example, 5th and 6th grade (6th was elementary where I went) would get their food after 1st-4th. Due to this and the fact that I was last in line, there was never any food left for me and I just started skipping lunch simply because they ran out of food. Imagine if you had to pay for lunch, when I was a kid, lunch was $3.00. Imagine having to pay $3.00 a day just to get some crackers and no lunch?

Why in the fuck do schools under provide the amount of food necessary? I missed lunch and went starving for the entirety of 5th and 6th grade because of this. I'm glad I didn't have to pay though, must be a huge kick in the face for the kids that did. For context as well, lunch was around 11 and I didn't go home till 5pm due to extracurriculars. So I literally ate breakfast at my parents at 7AM and wouldn't eat again till 5PM
