California power officials put out a plea: Shut it down at 4 p.m. to protect the grid.

It was actually an issue due to an error in the way Mitsubishi modeled their simulation when designing a cooling system for the reactors that caused the issue.

Once they shut the plant down due to a small leak from said cooling system a group pretending to be a bunch of hippies that was actually ran by home owners in San Onofre sued them to prevent the reactors from being turned on after they were fixed.

The lawsuit was taking a while and maintenance on the plant even without it running was >$1m/day so they cut their losses and closed up shop.

So now we have no nuclear power and higher energy cost just so some greedy losers can make more money when they sell their homes.

This is what I heard from a family member who was a supervisor there at least.
