California’s Drought: Not an Environmental Problem. An Environmentalist Problem.

Well...this article sums up basically how I think and feel about the drought, further supported by how long I have lived in California and the cycles that I have seen with the weather, rain and snow.

Most importantly, we all need to recognize that "drought" is a big, strong word. It can mean everything from less rain over a period of time, (which is where California is) to no rain at all, over many years. Think...Mars.

We are by no means, without water. Low on water? Yes.

Last winter Northern California received some water. Central California got hammered. The snow packed came and went and by no means set any records. Some reservoirs filled up, others were/are way down.

Southern California is a desert. Sometimes it gets a lot of rain, and then other times, nothing at all. It usually needs NorCal to help it.

Overall...it's cyclical and what matters more than anything is how you manage water and the number of people living here and what they do with water. This includes a lot of farming.

So...I do wonder, if we got down to the real science of things, how much of this drought is real, and how much of it is man made.

What I do know is that we have more than 30 million people living here (most are in that "desert") and yes, most of the rain fall does flow right back into the ocean. So...when times are tough it does tend to be much worse or more of a drain on living here, than just dealing with a few off winters.

If we continue to farm the way that we do, and continue to have this many people living here, with even more flowing in, water management is going to be key.

Not watering lawns is not going to fix anything.
