I called 911 for the first time today, and the girl I tried to help was furious with me.

That's nothing to feel bad about. You were acting on your empathy. You were concerned for another human. I would of done the same thing. Here's a personal story from when I was 5 or 6 years old: i heard a crashing sound come from my parent's bedroom. I went to investigate. My mother was lying on the carpet unconscious and a broken vase was scattered around her. The vase fell from a shelf. I didn't know what to do so I kept repeating "mom" and shook her shoulder. No one else was home. Then I just stood there and stared. I wasn't smart enough to make the association with the broken vase. She woke up after a few minutes. Looked at me and the broken ceramic on the floor. Rubbed her head and asked me why didn't I call the police. I said I don't know. She laughed and asked what if she never woke up, "you're some help!". So that experience taught me it's important to ACT and act quickly. If she were bleeding in her brain, every minute I spent watching her was a minute closer to her death. You made the right call.
