I think most religion is rooted in the search for an ultimate truth on some level or another, the issue being it goes astray quickly because of human interest and instincts we can't shake.

Most religions have touched on ideas that the scientific process is now discovering to be true in some way or another, they simply used different words to describe it. We know the world wasn't formed from a giant egg, or popped into being from 'the one God'...but it was formed from The Big Bang, a singular creative event. Mankind isn't 'sculpted by God' but it was 'sculpted' by evolution. We may not be interconnected with the world spiritually, but we all came from the first cellular body, and we're slowly discovering things like quantum entanglement.

In a way I see religion as stupid, but in another way it feels like a set of billiard balls all smacked out of that initial triangle, hypothesizing at what the original shape was. Only science can tell for sure, ultimately, but we all have a hunch.
