We're just arguing amongst ourselves now seeing as the thread was deleted. Just checking - you do realise that scooters can only go 50km/h?
Anyway, he asked the other way around - can he ride a scooter from Wellington to the Hutt Valley. Given the reddit demographic and the fact he wasn't familiar with local roads and rides a scooter, I'd hazard a guess that he's a student and probably lives in Kelburn, Mount Cook, Newtown or thereabouts.
The "big long road" he was asking about was most likely the urban motorway as that is the usual route for most people driving out to the Hutt. You used to be able to do it on a scooter (still not recommended) but now there is no shoulder lane northbound so it's dangerous to try it.
In that case he has to take the Old Hutt Road instead until he reaches SH2 and then he can hop on the highway, which is what people were pointing out. I also added that he should get off at Petone as there is no shoulder lane under the bridge so it would also be unsafe for scooters.
The impression your first post gave was that it was okay to ride the whole stretch as it wasn't actually a motorway. This was wrong and I hope to hell he didn't attempt to do it.
