do you think we can elect a socialist in 2020?

Can America ever become a socialist nation?

The founding myths of the US since its colonization by the British was a pursuit of profit and an negative identity on whichever national rival at the time. (i.e, Americans defined themselves through the narrative ofSettler vs Native, American colonist/bourgeoisie vs British aristocracy/subject, Slave owner vs slave, white vs color, nativist vs immigrant, capitalist vs communist, Westerner vs Islam)

American culture and state hegemony should be seen as capitalism's primary incarnation and enforcer. Any notions of a life outside of the pursuit of wealth and pleasure is irregular. People like Henry David Thoreau were outliers. A social and political revolution has to have fermentation for it to be complete; America hasn't built a parallel society to replace capitalism.

The French Revolution, English Civil War, and the Russian Revolutions had nascent parallel societies and social configurations to replace the existing social order. The bourgeoisie of England and France had their own networks, the Russians had the Soviet councils. The American bourgeoisie lack internal rivals. We are very disconnected from one another and mesmerized by our own bread and circuses.

I don't see the US becoming socialist until there is a vision for an alternative society, a mass movement ready for something new, and intellectuals who can transition from capitalist hegemony to a new society/socialism.

Currently, neoliberalism is losing its mystique and its rationalization comes from something like that phrase:"It's not perfect but it's the best we got" .
