Islam can reform its approach to sharia, but not the system of religion. It can't reform just like christianity did. Christianity was replaced from a religion of Abraham to a religion of the state naturally unlike the muslim world. Muslim countries have almost no clue how to deal with westphalic nationalism with a few exceptions like Egypt, Lebanon, and Morocco. Christianity also had a 'loophole' that allowed christians to just take out all the violent stuff (new testament vs old testament stuff). the US alone has over 200 denominations of christianity. Each denominations interpret the faith however they choose to, and a lot of them take out the stoning, killing infidels, adultery etc stuff. How this happened in Christianity can't happen in Islam; It's literally impossible, even if you guilt trip the hell out of them like far-right people are doing. Adding to this point, another reason it can't happen is that you need to understand that scholars won't allow it to happen simply because it stems from western philosophy.

Islam right now is ridden with geopolitics. Whenever you see 'Islamic' don't think Quran, think politics. A lot of people don't realize this. When a cleric says something is 'UnIslamic' theres more than a 50% chance what he indirectly actually means is that it just didn't come from the Muslim world. The burqa for one is entirely a geopolitical identity staple at this point. Most women in the west who wear the hijab do so because their teachers told them not to be too western (although its still her choice which she'll defends herself by).

My solution to islam is propose a muslim worldwide reconstruction period of self identity & purpose in the muslim world; a cultural revolution as opposed to religious reform (i promise you religious reform won't work, its not a question in a lot of cases unless you want war which would cause more extremism unless serious genocide happens). People don't just leave Islam because God is bullshit (obviously thats the biggest part). Muslim-Atheists are politically prosecuted and often times struggle with self-identity as people with muslim identities do. I have a close friend named mohammed who's an atheist. He seems to engage people like "hey I'm 'Mo' btw I'm not a terrorist haha, I own 5 camels, lets drink i LOVVE alcohol; bitches am i right? Bacon is the fucking best i can eat it all day, and i hate saudi arabia they're a bunch of cunts" kinda deal almost in a seeking validation kinda way (obviously not straight up like that, he isn't aspy). regardless, he's a cool guy, and the point I'm making there is that anyone with any form of muslim identity, be it name or religious affiliation currently is profiled and totally fucked. I was a muslim atheist aswell for a while but some of the community sorta creeped me out. Loads of people there had so much hate for their people and country to a point where they wished to change their name and dye their hair blonde (obviously not all; and the resentment is well founded).

Anyway, Muslims have absolutely NOTHING to be proud about. like ZERO man. Muslims don't even have a fucking car on the mainstream market dude. the fact that there are MILLIONS of proud muslims who are totally peaceful people says something. the fact that statistically there are 1.6 billion (although its safe to assume a whole bunch of these people just have muslim names but aren't religious) yet a lack of scientific innovation or at the forefront of anything is the REAL problem with Islam. I understand islamic terrorism is the biggest issue, but in the end of the day its not entirely the religion thats causing it; its political grievances and then they turn to their doctrine and justify action or pull stuff out of their asses. Islam serves NO purpose whatsoever right now, seriously. Muslims have absolutely NOTHING to be proud about other than the religion itself. This messes up peoples heads. Jews have Israel, countless nobel prizes, huge corporations, most of hollywood. Christians have the free world etc. The way to reform Islam is to convince scholars that in the modern day, warfare/war games does not work. Replace the sword with pens, natural sciences, computer science, art, engineering, culture, music, film, clean-energy etc, and the 'Muslim world' will have a strong influential presence in the world; if they're so keen to expand the religion this is how modern imperialism works anyways. There needs to be incitement for a purely islamic enlightenment period that may lead or make room for reworking sharia.

I don't think there is any other way. The only other way is to let globalization naturally occur overtime until it becomes westernized enough to be a 'western' muslim world. This is already happening. Look at Dubai for example, its literally the coolest/best city in the gulf simply because its the most westernized when you think about it. the laws are not completely there yet, but you need to consider Saudi arabia as a regional power. Also, with this solution, other than islamic terrorism, you have to worry about the economic shift from west to east thats currently happening that might change that again (think Turkey).
