Can we just try Democratic Socialism for 8 years?

No, socialists (and socialism) is a belief in strong regulation. It's the belief that how the means of production be used should be determined by the community as a whole, and not one individual actor. Communism is when all members of society own all the means of production. The difference is that under communism, all bread production is owned by the State. Under socialism, a bread factory would be heavily regulated, but owned as a private company or a cooperative. Additionally, where under communism the idea of private tools and ownership would be anathema, under socialism a small cottage bread industry could exist and the community as a whole might choose not to regulate it as closely as the bread factory.
