Can a landlord charge me after returning my apartment deposit?

How many of you have had similar rental situations where this has occurred?

One of my best mates had this very same scenario about a month ago. DPS deposit returned, landlord pops up a week later asking for money for a damaged door and window.

As it was over a week after moving out, I simply suggested he replied with a

We can discuss a settlement once proof of damage, including proof of when this damage occurred. I am requesting proof of damage and information as to when this damage occurred as I vacated the property over a week ago and at that time was lead to believe, indeed agreed with your own assessment that the property, at the time I returned it, was in satisfactory condition. This was formally agreed, including through the DPS process, as such objective information suggesting I am liable for these damages will be required.

And guess what, we haven't heard a single word back since then. Seems like a perfectly valid and fair response to me as well... No suggestion that he was unwilling to pay, but equally given the property was vacated it's entirely reasonable to expect proof of damages.

I suppose your case is different, because you are aware of the damages and accept a level of liability. But that doesn't mean the rest of the situation is untrue - you did agree that the property was in satisfactory condition, hence the return of the deposit. It's entirely reasonable to now ask under what grounds they are claiming these charges, even if you agree with them in part!
