But in essence usually malware can spread to other files on the computer, not all file types but some at least (as you mentioned the doc files which can have macros) and from what I've read pictures and other types of files can also get infected.

So basically if I encounter a possible malware infection best case would be to just wipe everything to ensure things stay clean.

Obviously chances of getting something so nasty that spreads to other files without an active anti virus software (or malwarebytes checks) wouldn't notice should not be very high.

Especially from simply by clicking a link or a bad ad (because those type of infections from my understanding rely on vulnerabilities e.g. of the browser or a plugin) but technically the chance is there.

So it'd be best to just backup important files to a drive that is not connected so if the computer gets infected the backed up important files can't be affected.
