Can old clothes be converted to yarn?

Old knit t-shirts = new underwear for me. While crafting with T-shirt yarn works really, really well for knit/crochet baskets and other home goods (especially if you integrate dyes to give more uniform, polished effects) I like using old clothes to make new clothes. That’s the advantage of being ambi-crafterous! I just turned a silverfish-nibbled cashmere sweater (donated by an aunt who never seems to have worn it) into the softest, warmest beanie I’ve ever had. I could have probably turned the entire sweater into yarn (still might with the excess) but finding the right gauge to knit it at for a hat or scarf would take a lot more effort. With sewing it took 20 minutes plus a night of mat blocking.
