Today's smartphones are great pocket tablets, and cameras but terrible phones. People are not buying them for their ease of use in making calls, but in spite of them being terrible phones. The iPhone was famous for having terrible reception problems. Now few care about it because most people don't call. I think that's well he driving cars for a while yet though.

This argument that the model 3 sparse interior is more innovative, aesthetically pleasing, and more relevant is disingenuous. I don't think you'll see any new model S or Xs so adorned anytime soon, as the highest end buyers won't see the less is more argument. A giant tablet plopped on a straight dash is really stretching anyone's idea of beauty, and autonomous driving is still at least 6 years away technically and probably a decade or more away legislatively, which negates any idea that this ridiculous design is appropriate for a car that will be used well before full autonomous driving is a reality.
