Can’t recall certain words

Variables to isolate: - Practice: Are the words that you are not recalling part of your daily conversation, or are you reaching for more vivid words that you have learned before, but don't exercise often?

  • Novelty: Are the words that you are not recalling fairly new to you? It takes some time and practice for most people to encode, store, and recall information with fluidity, and it takes time and practice.

  • Authority: Who are you talking to, the few times a day that you are not recalling certain words? Do you see yourself as superior, inferior, or as an equal to that/those people? I know when I'm speaking to a distinguished person whom I perceive as intelligent, I grasp for more vivid words to use, especially after gaging their vocabulary (a sort of mirroring effect).

  • Situation: Under what circumstances are you not recalling certain words? Are you in a high-pressure situation where you're "put on the spot?" Are you having trouble with recall after lunch, when blood is diverted towards digestive purposes, rather than to cognitive resources? Is this late into the day when you are generally fatigued?

  • Nutrition: What does your daily diet look like? I won't get into how our food affects our mood, thoughts, and behavior, but I will point out that certain kinds of fish, as good as they can be for you, may have some toxic heavy metals that may accumulate in our systems. Example: Mercury poisoning can mimic Alzheimer's disease. I noticed in a two-week period where I consumed more fish than usual, I was having brain farts with recalling exact words, and when I can usually outline in my mind points A, B, and C, that I was challenged with remembering the sequence, connections, and transitions of the points, before delivering a speech. Since then, I became more careful about the source of the fish, and the frequency at which I consumed fish.

All of these variables are worth exploring. Don't beat yourself up about it. There is always an explanation. Whatever you do, don't loathe yourself and think anything less of your knowledge, skills, and abilities!
