I can’t stop drinking

Maybe.

I was (or "am" according to the AA people) for almost a decade. I drank alone always (we're talking amounts that would astound most people by the way). In fact, when I did go out with people I specifically wouldn't drink because I knew what a disaster I would turn into.

Regardless, one's company is almost never the cause of an addiction. It's a psychological issue. It's personal.

So, "change your company" might be a nice three-word post, but it really isn't good advice. I know of dozens of alcoholics who kept their friends who drink, and those friends understood their problems.

You NEED close friends who understand and can care for you during recovery. It doesn't matter if they can handle drinking moderately or not. The issue is that YOU can't handle it.

Cutting out close friends who drink is an absolutely horrible idea, assuming they're not pressuring you to drink.
