Canada’s military police commander defends unit’s handling of sexual misconduct cases

There’s a difference between being detailed and being without empathy when taking a statement. Going by Lt MacDonalds comments in the article, it sounds like she felt like they went too far. You shouldn’t be treating a potential victim as a suspect and hitting them with a “barrage” of questions doesn’t help. Pointed and detailed questions for sure. It depends on the tact your using.

As for systemic problems, there have been a number of reports out on problems the branch has faced. Lack of experience is one, a few bases are busy. Many are not. Most civvie cops will tell you you learn the job by being on the job. There’s a lot of nuance to police work, being experienced with different situations means you have had time to develop as a police member. Doesn’t mean you’re a rock star but it helps.

Tie that into the military hierarchy we have to abide by, training issues, recruitment issues, postings etc it all adds up. Really this could be a novel but short answer? The branch has a lot of promise and good members however it’s hamstrung by a lot of factors. Tie that into the CAF wide and MP branch issue of retaining members, it hasn’t been a great time.
