The Canadiens have agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with free agent forward Ilya Kovalchuk. The deal will pay Kovalchuk $700,000 at the NHL level and $70,000 in the AHL.

I still have a hard time believing that even Bergevin truly believe Scandella and Kovalchuk move us into wild card contenders. Bergevin is probably "playing 8D chess" by signing a guy that we might as well throw out on the top PP and in our top 6 in hopes we can prop up his stats and coup a 5th or 6th round pick that will turn into the next Guy LaFleur, as per many on this sub

Reality is, he probably got sick of watching Cousins on the first line and decided he's seen enough from Poehling/Vejdemo to know he would rather them develop more in the AHL than play middling minutes in the NHL. And we need more active roster players to do that over the short-term.
