Canon 55-250 stm or sigma 18-250

Your 18-55 should be fine for just general photos of family and friends, you may want a faster lens down the road but for now I'd stick with that and learn with it. I can personally recommend the 55-250 STM, it's a very good zoom on a budget and I'm extremely happy with mine. I've owned it for about 6 months or so. I bought mine as I was looking to replace a 70-300 and I recommend it to anyone looking to save money on a telephoto lens.

Christopher Frost has an excellent review of the 55-250 STM here on youtube and I echo his praises about it. Its very sharp and the stabilization is excellent. I haven't done any video with it yet but the AF is silent for general shooting. I think I picked it up refurbished for 140 or so.

Here's some quick examples I've taken with it
