Are generating functions a freshman course?

So, this semester we have a subject which differs each year and depends on the professor's interest. In previous years the course was usually an easy A, with the prof going over many basic concepts and interesting discoveries in math. This year, however, the professor teaching the course decided to dedicate the semester to generating functions. Keep in mind, we've only had one semester of math so far (Calc 1, algebra 1, set theory, programming) The book for the course is generatingfunctionology by Herbert Wilf. The lectures started off looking very hard, but I waited for the labs since that's where we usually see how to approach these problems. Instead of the TA showing us how to solve these generating functions, we were just given a worksheet, split into groups and told to find the answers ourselves. Nobody knew how to tackle the problems. We're thinking of going to the program coordinator and telling him what we think about the course. Before that, i wanted to get some input from you guys, because I don't wanna look like a fool. Do your think this is good enough for a complaint? Here is one problem we got for homework, just do you get the feel for it https://www.m.imgur.com/a/r52NIZU And here's the book we're doing https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://www.math.upenn.edu/~wilf/gfology2.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwjyr92J8KzhAhVppIsKHfOqCF8QFjAAegQIAxAB&usg=AOvVaw2TSs9kdgxVfEc6qG6gAWs_

Keep in mind that the professor doesn't really explain very well and enjoys skipping steps (like sum reindexing without warning).

Thanks for the help guys :D
