Career as a Hedge Fund Manager

I'd say the first step is figuring out what kind of strategy you want to run, in very general terms. The path to being a macro quant PM is, um, a little different from the path to being a distressed credit PM.

The other question is whether you're interested more in the autonomy or the money. If it's the latter then it's important to understand that a PM who makes more than a good analyst at under a generous PM has been seriously killing it for a long time.

Other than in high school your only goal is to get into a reasonably decent college and get on a track to start in AM/ER/IB/quant/S&T/HF/PE/PhD depending on exactly what interests you.
