Cashiers of Reddit, what's been the most interesting reaction you've experienced when someone's gotten their card declined?

At the blue polo shirt electronics store I worked at when I was young, a friendly patron was attempting to purchase a Playstation2 when they were brand new.

His presented a card and "matching" ID (the ID was sketchy, but I was young and for some reason gave him the benefit of the doubt). Credit card was declined. He said he had a limit on it, and try to run it for half the price, still declined. He is agitated but pulls out a checkbook single check from his pocket. He writes the total plus $20 to get cash back (which is something we did not do). I told him we didn't offer that and he would need to write a new check, he explained that was his only check and I NEEDED to accept it.

I noticed some weird discoloration on the check around the name part of the account number. It looked like it had been erased and typed over. I make a face at the LP guy and sorta nod for him to come over.

I thought I was sly, so I told the customer, "Oh yeah, I forgot, we can do that, let me just get the supervisor to approve it, it will only take a second."

I get on the phone and tell the supervisor the situation, he just says "we don't do that" and hangs up....

I call him back and I'm like, HEY, I NEED YOU TO COME APPROVE SOMETHING as I'm making faces at him across the store.

The customer said something I didn't hear (I think he said nevermind) then snatched the check from me and bolted out the door.
