Casual Discussion Fridays - Week of May 24, 2019

I know people's thoughts on legal streaming services are contentious. I can agree, what with Netflix's refusal to simulcast, Funimation's licensing restrictions, or... everything Crunchyroll has done in the past year... But hell, I love HIDIVE. It's the only legit anime platform I subscribe to, for numerous reasons. Mind if I gush about it for a second? Great.

  • I love HIDIVE's UI. The mobile apps aren't good, but the UI of the website is very Netflix-esque, which is always a good thing. The video player is great, too. (That's why I hate using free sites; it has nothing to do with "supporting the industry", but they look hideous!)
  • It has so many QoL features that I wish other platforms had. Want separate lists for your queue, favorites, and continue watching? You got it. Want to change languages and subtitles on the fly? You got it. Want to drop a show? You got it. Why can't you have these features, Crunchyroll?
  • This is the streaming home for Sentai Filmworks, who are, in my opinion, the best anime licensing company... ever. They are true anime fans; they love it, they know we love it, and they'll make it as easily available to us as possible. I've never bought one of their limited edition sets, but knowing what comes with them, I'd love to one day. Also, their sense of humor is amazing; you should have seen HIDIVE's April Fool's joke this year. A VHS tape with every HIDIVE show? Sure, I'd buy it.
  • Speaking of their shows, they have Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Haikyuu, Kino's Journey, Azumanga Daioh, Food Wars, DanMachi, Made in Abyss, Parasyte, Higurashi, Patlabor, The Big O, Clannad, Bloom into You, Land of the Lustrous, and Squid Girl, as well as multiple films and OVAs. How can I say no to that?
  • Hell, Legend of the Galactic Heroes alone is enough of a reason to subscribe.
