Cat owners, what unexpected things did you experience when you first got a cat?

I've always had cats and loved cats and their independent nature, and I always understood that they just had a different way of showing affection. I grew up with really anti-social cats or cats who didn't really like children understandably who I admired from afar, so I never knew how just how cuddly and affectionate they can be until I ended up with a total lap cat as an adult. Like this cat is our shadow. He's always gotta be near you, on you, or just with you in some way and he's so lovable and cuddly like a teddy bear. Loves attention and is so friendly. I've only ever experienced that sort of affection from dogs before him, so it was a super unexpected, but really pleasant surprise for me.
