CDC: Obesity rates hit a new high

The sugar tax needs to be charged to the companies, not at the point of sale, if we want it to actually work.

Adding a 10% additional tax does nothing for most of the products causing the issue in terms of sales.

Your econ 101 teacher was full of shit. Supply and demand isn't as simple as "well something costs more so fewer people will be willing/able to purchase it". People aren't rational buyers. Of a Snickers gets slapped with a 10% tax it won't fucking matter. No one at a register is willing to pay $1.19 for a Snickers but would scoff at throw it back on the shelf if it was $1.30.

They have to tax the company producing the sugary treat if they want production and consumption to stop. I'm not saying it's the right thing to do, or that people shouldn't take responsibility on themselves as consumers. I'm just saying a sugar tax at the point of sale won't do shit. Just like an alcohol tax at the point of sale doesn't stop people from drinking.

And this also varies from your second point about providing breaks for those who produce healthier. That won't work unless the above is done as well. If we give breaks to healthy producers their products aren't going to get cheaper for the consumer. Apples won't suddenly drop 20% if we do that. Healthy options will still be more expensive than sugary ones.

If you want to stop the consumption of sugar, the only way to actually do it is to stop the production.
