Here is a report by Amnesty international on caning in Malaysia which has similar rules. https://www.univie.ac.at/bimtor/dateien/malaysia_ai_2010_blow_to_humanity.pdf The mental and physical trauma is immense, people shudder at the thought of just one to a few strokes.
Here are some quotes from the people the interviewed for the report:
“The pain goes up to your head. It felt like an electric shock. I don’t have the words for it,”
“Two or three of us lost consciousness after two strokes. I was blinded by the pain.”
“When it gets beyond five, the flesh disintegrates,”
“It was the worst pain in my life. Even after my motorcycle accident I didn’t feel like that”
“The pain continued for two weeks. For even one stroke it takes two weeks,”
“If I sit down for a long time I get a burning sensation in my butt, at the
wound.”
“I still can’t sit down for a long time. I feel weak and feel pain in the wound,”
“I feel mentally unstable. Psychologically I don’t feel the same as before,”
“I feel that I am mentally destroyed, after they whipped me, I still felt that rotan. I saw only that rotan.”
