Champion Pool Discussion Megathread #7

I play a lot of champions, but mainly Riven. Hate me all you want. But I am here to tell why I play her, and why you should (or should not, lol). First few times when you play her, unless you are better than the players you are facing, be prepared to feed most likely, not necessarily though. I've got over 400k on Riven, still counting and I do want to make it to 1m. It is not only spamming her, I've practiced her a lot in customs and tried many different build paths and runes/masteries.

  1. I play Riven because I think she is one of the hardest champions to master and play on a high level. She probably has the most animation cancels of any champions, and without knowing them you can not delete people efficiently and your damage and burst are much more lackluster. I don't think it is even possible to master her without thousands on games on her.

She requires all the things that a simple champion does (basic league mechanics and knowledge) and also deep understanding of your kit and how it interacts in a certain matchup. Most of the matchups, nearly all of them in the meta right now are not in her favor. You only really win when you play better than your opponent, or when your opponent plays worse than you. She requires deep understanding of the matchups and how to flow animation cancels into deeper combos.

But honestly, she is a lot of fun and a huge learning process. That is the main reason I play her. Not to be some cool guy who has mastered a hard champion, no. I just find learning interesting and feels rewarding. She is very flashy, but tbh right now she can feel really lackluster even if you know what you are doing.

  1. I play Riven in multiple ways, all depends on the masteries. I have a Fervor Page, Grasp Page, and a TLD page. I prefer Fervor over the others. Itemization and build path will be very situational and dependant on the masteries and enemy champions. Runes I dont really care too much about, aslong as they have 10% CDR. I prefer AS and armor pen over AD. I build AD heavy regardless, not really a CDR-a-holic (granted I still do get 40-45% cdr but not rushing kindlegems and shit). I like to play an opportunistic way of play. Not overly agressive, or passive. Nowadays you really don't get away with being overly agressive imo. I punish and deny what I can, and I leave behind what I have to.

  2. I am good mechanically. When it comes to predicting, anticipating and flowing buttonpresses in quick success. I'm much worse with the mouse mechanically though, not bad though but comparably. I am very aware of the map and my teammates. I also have somewhat good gameknowledge, which I should be able to base off good decisions off. Although this is not the case often. I make a lot of bad decisions just because I get too hyped or bored, or am not thinking what I am doing. I always realise what I did wrong afterwards or even before I did something stupid, but I still fucking did it. It's hard for me to stop it lmao. Call it the Riven syndrome if you will.

I want to be good at making great decisions and being able to know my damage throughout, and not take dumb risks and only take calculated plays. That is what I aspire to be able to do. It will take time to get me there.
