Changes I actually *WANT* to see to FFVII's Story in the Remake...

To be honest, part of me loves how obscure Zack's story is in the original FF7. Not only is it purely optional, it's actually pretty well hidden, and it really leaves you having to piece a lot of information together for yourself.

I think this is what I like the most about Final Fantasy VII's storyline - a lot of the story is in what isn't told.

As for Zack, I never found the cutscenes in my first playthroughs nearly 20 years ago, but stumbled upon them this year in my first playthrough in a decade. I already had some idea of who Zack was in relation to Cloud prior to finding the cutscenes, but the cutscenes were just enough information to make it all 'click' - Cloud saying it's been '5 years' to Tifa when it was really 7, because they were in Shinra Mansion basement, Tifa's subsequent suspicion, Cloud getting the Buster Sword, etc.

I think the way they put together the story was just enough information that the story made sense on 1 playthrough, and for anyone adventurous enough to run around looking over every little thing in subsequent playthroughs, it's rewarding to find the information that fills in the cracks in the storyline that they may have missed in the first playthroughs.

To me, FFVII plays out like a crime drama - more of the story involves trying to figure out the plot, than it does having the plot explain itself. And personally, I think it's what made the game great because it allows some room for interpretation, and I think the developers are keen on that concept.

If they add to Zack's story or not, I'll probably be happy, but it's just an observation - a good story isn't always in what's being told, it's in what's not being told as well.

Hopefully, whatever they do stays true to the story in the original game as much as possible.
