[Chantal Hébert] Doug Ford’s war with CUPE risks throwing Canada into a unity crisis

This could cause a major political crisis within Quebec. A lot of Quebecers are supporters of unions, and oppose the usage of the Notwithstanding Clause. A large portion will obviously also by sympathetic to Ontarians fighting for their constitutional rights.

This puts Quebec society in a bind: Does the government have the right to take away your constitutional rights? Yes or no. It’ll be an incredibly contentious question.

The reaction of Ontarians to the Notwithstanding Clause also sets a dangerous new precedent for Canada’s premiers. Future use of the clause now opens the door to mass strikes, public mutiny and a genuine political and security crisis. Canadians have seen Ontario’s reaction to this, and they will emulate it.

This all puts Legault in a really tough position. He might be best off just downplaying the significance of this.
