Chaotic+anxiety=Lawful? My plaguebringer is a weeny and idk his alignment

I think, by that description of evil, most of my evil characters/NPCs aren't. I'm also a bit iffy on the lawful-chaotic scale being a team-solo scale - a pirate crew is generally chaotic, after all, as are a camp of bandits.

I tend to view good-evil as a sliding scale of selflessness-selfishness (heavily simplified - Would you risk your life to help a stranger? Good. Would you kill a stranger to help yourself? Evil. No to both? Neutral) and law-chaos as...well, trickier.

On the one hand, I think a strict personal code makes you lawful. On the other, antipaladins have a code they must follow that pretty narrowly defines their behaviour (which is so incredibly stupid, in my opinion). I often end up thinking of it as a potential obedience scale - how likely are they to respect an authority figure, and how likely are they to follow the orders of a respected authority to the letter? But this also has problems with aforementioned pirates and bandits. I'll admit to not really having a hard and fast rule for the law-chaos scale I really like.
