Charlton Athletic - Red and white scarf has been placed on the seat which PC Keith Palmer occupied for many years

I don't like the idea of retiring seats, or retiring anything in fact. To me, it's more of the opposite, if it's for a negative reason, fine retire it. For instance someone like Cantona might be considered as having tarnished his jersey because of his violence on the pitch (I do NOT think they should retire his jersey, it's just past 3 AM I cba thinking of good examples).

But if the person is held in high regards in a positive matter, then I'd much rather see the seat or jersey, or whatever it is, be used even more, but highlighted. For instance, this seat might get a different color and a plaque for him "A seat for heroes" or something.

Or with jerseys, when Messi retires for instance I'd think it was cool if they had all future 10s custom made with a very small "Messi" on the sleeve something. He brought happiness and greatness to the number 10 jersey, why shun it and hide it away? Celebrate it, let it be used by lots of generations to come. Knowing that great men have worn it before them.
